The Terms Technical mission to assess the pollution of Río la Pasión, Guatemala 2015of Reference for Geohazards Experts describes the required background and key responsibilities of experts deployed by the UN Environment/OCHA Joint Unit during emergency response missions.

Disasters triggered by natural hazards such as earthquakes and floods often result in significant secondary environmental impacts like mudslides. These secondary impacts can pose immediate life-threatening risks to humans and create new long-term challenges. A key element of humanitarian response is the rapid risk assessment of these GeoHazards to mitigate the secondary impacts of natural disasters.
